THE PLACE
Arctic light, red houses on stilts, and a fjord that never quite freezes.
The sun barely clears the water, and the whole day is one long golden hour.

Eight days threading the archipelago end to end by road.
GROUP
Max 10 travellers
Small group, one van — flexible for the light and weather.
WINDOW
Sep — Mar
Midnight sun in summer, aurora season in the dark months.
PACE
Active · arctic light
Moderate — ridge hikes and coastal walks, some steep sections.
FITNESS

From €5,600 pp
Per person, land only — cabins, guides and transfers included.
WHY THIS ONE
Forty-two places. This is one of them.
01
Winter is the better trip and the harder sell.
Most people book July. The islands in February have the aurora, the low light and nobody at all on the beaches. It is also cold, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
February −2 °C · aurora on 6 nights in 10 · beaches empty
02
Everything is within the hour, so we stop chasing it.
Nine peaks and four beaches inside an hour's drive. We stay in one place and go out from it, instead of packing the van every morning and calling that an itinerary.
5 nights in one bed · longest drive 55 min
03
Weather closes the ridges, not the week.
Some days the tops are off. There is always a fjord, a beach or a workshop that is on. I would rather turn a group around at the col than come back with the photograph.
3 ridge days planned · 2 usually run · always a plan B

All day
On foot
Ridge climbs and white-sand coves reached over a pass, all within an hour of the cabin.
After dark
After dark
Rorbuer cabins on stilts, a wood stove, and the sea moving under the floor.
Aurora on six nights in ten · February around −2 °C
Sea eagles daily · otters at the harbour · whales offshore
6 km ridge day · 620 m of ascent · all within the hour
Five nights in one bed · wood stove · the sea under the floor
