THE PLACE

The driest sky anyone has ever slept under, and the clearest.

Nothing grows here — and somehow that is the most alive a sky can feel.

NIGHTS

10

Nine days, with a built-in acclimatisation day before altitude.

GROUP

Max 11 travellers

Small enough for the geyser trip to feel unhurried.

WINDOW

Apr — Oct

Clearest skies of the year for the salt flats and stargazing.

PACE

Easy · high desert

Moderate — most days are excursions, not long treks.

FITNESS

Good · high altitude

Good general fitness; altitude is the main factor, not distance.

FROM

From €5,200 pp

Per person, land only — stays, guides and transfers included.

WHY THIS ONE

Forty-two places. This is one of them.

01

Altitude decides the first two days, not the itinerary.

San Pedro sits at 2,400 metres and the geysers at 4,300. We spend two days low while your body catches up. Trips that skip this are selling you a headache at sunrise and calling it an early start.

2,400 m base · 4,300 m high point · 2 days acclimatising

02

The sky is the reason, so we protect it.

The whole week is planned around the new moon and we do not run it otherwise. A full moon here is a beautiful and completely useless night for the thing you came to see.

New moon only · astronomer and telescope · 2 night sessions

03

The driest place on earth is not an empty one.

Flamingos on the salt, vicuña above four thousand, and a village that was here long before the desert had a name. People arrive expecting Mars and leave talking about lunch.

3 lagoons · 1 village · rain almost never recorded

Turquoise lagoon surrounded by arid landscape and mountains
The Milky Way galaxy stretching across a dark night sky with scattered stars
brown mountain near body of water under blue sky during daytime
brown road during day time
a dirt road in a desert

THE EXPERIENCE

One day, four times over.

04:40

The light

Dawn at the geysers, dusk in the Valle de la Luna — the two hours the desert performs.

Mornings

Wildlife

Flamingos working the salt flats, vicuña on the altiplano, almost nothing else.

All day

On foot

Salt canyons and lagoon shores, walked slowly while the altitude settles.

After dark

After dark

The clearest skies anywhere, with an astronomer and a telescope for the good nights.

04:30 start · geysers at 4,300 m · two golden hours

Three flamingo species · vicuña above four thousand

2,400 m base · short days first · 8 km maximum

New moon only · astronomer and telescope · two night sessions

THE JOURNEY

The route, in four movements.

A small group, a long stay — one valley, walked slowly from end to end.

Days 1–2

Arrive — Calama

Up to the high desert, and a first slow night to let the altitude settle.

San Pedro · 2,400 m · two days acclimatising

Days 3–4

Valle de la Luna

Salt flats, geysers at dawn, and the driest ground on earth underfoot.

Valle de la Luna · salt canyons · 8 km

Days 5–6

The clearest sky

Three nights of nothing but stars, in the place astronomers come to for the dark.

El Tatio at 4,300 m · 04:30 start · new-moon nights

Days 7–8

Out slow

Down through the oasis towns, unhurried, back to where you started.

Altiplano lagoons · flamingos · out via Calama
